Our first week in Reception
In our first few weeks in Reception, the children have been busy exploring and learning in so many exciting ways. In provision, we have enjoyed role play in our very own doctor’s surgery, measuring how tall we are, listening to heartbeats, and giving advice while dressed up in white coats. We’ve been busy building, creating, and painting wonderful self-portraits, as well as practising writing our names. The dolls’ house has been a popular space for imaginative play and storytelling too.
In maths, we have focused on matching and sorting, developing early number and reasoning skills through hands-on activities. Our books this half term have included Super Duper You and a non-fiction text, My Body Book. Inspired by these, we have labelled body parts and created our own “All About Me” pages to celebrate what makes each of us unique.
It’s been a brilliant start to the year, full of curiosity, creativity, and confidence!
Science Week
For science week we have been testing the boats we made using different materials. We tested to see which floated and which sank. We used vocabulary such as 'floating', 'sinking', 'density', 'waterproof' and 'material'. The children were very excited to test their boats.
Science Week
Our big question was 'could plants grow on the moon?' We are currently monitoring and making observations on this by putting one seed in a cold fridge and one by the window to see which grows better. We used language like 'seed', 'plant', 'stem', 'roots', 'and 'temperature.'
Mini Olympics
Today we took part in Mini Olympics where we completed a circuit of activities involving throwing, jumping, hopping, skipping and running. The children did a great job!
Spring Half Term
This half term in reception we are learning all about the Lunar New Year and how it is celebrated across the world. We have discovered which year we were born in, the characteristics of those animals and where they came in the great race. We are going to extend our science knowledge and find out more about animals and where they live, what they eat and how they are cared for in a zoo! In maths we have been exploring numbers to 8, doubling number and learning all about odd and even. We will be measuring length and height next and learning to compare them.
Shrove Tuesday
We have been learning about Shrove Tuesday and how it is celebrated. We made pancakes and then wrote instructions on how to make them using the words 'first', 'next', 'after that' and 'finally'. We then learnt about Lent and its importance to Christians.
Beebots
We have been using Beebots to experiment with programming. We learnt how to give Beebots instructions, how to clear instructions, and how to make it move and turn. After adult modelling the children went on to make their own maps for the Beebots. The children did well to work as a team to get the Beebots to where they wanted on their maps. Lots of perseverance- one of our school values!
